Archiving family memories and dreams

by Gerlinde Schuller

The research project develops narratives on cultural heritage and customs, family legacies and dreams, migration and trauma.

The focus of the first contribution is the history and culture of the Transylvanian Saxons, a group of people of German ethnicity who were settled in Transylvania (Romania) in waves starting from the mid-12th century. Since the 1970s and in a major boost since 1990, the vast majority has left Romania. The Transylvanian Saxons formed protected communities in towns and villages, where they maintained ethnic tradition characterised in specific customs, folklore, way of life, and distinctive clothing style.

I have conducted research on this topic in many different archives. My focus was on images, especially photographs, that can be used to reconstruct family histories over several generations.

The results of my research are presented on the website:
Archiving family memories and dreams.
