Monument Now

by Gerlinde Schuller

A research project on the possibility of a contemporary monument for the Dutch politician Johan Rudolf Thorbecke (1798-1872). This liberal statesman drafted the revision of the Constitution of the Netherlands in 1848, giving less power to the king and more to the States General, and guaranteeing more religious, personal and political freedom to the people.

The research for Monument Now – Workshop Thorbecke was commissioned by Stroom, Center for visual arts and architecture, The Hague (NL).

The documentary exhibition in which the designer Gerlinde Schuller and the artists Florian Göttke, Hans van Houwelingen and André Kruysen present their vision concerning a monument for Thorbecke was shown at Stroom in 2008.
