Another Europe

Visual concept and design of a publication published by the European Cultural Foundation (NL) to provide an overview of the concepts and experiences that have emerged from collaborating with cultural initiatives in the EU Neighbourhood countries.

Since initiating its programmes for the Balkans in 1999, ECF has collaborated with cultural initiatives in all the EU neighbouring regions, including Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, Turkey, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon and EU-Russia (Kaliningrad). Other countries such as Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria and Croatia were already part of ECF’s capacity-building programmes before they joined the EU.

“The 21st century has left us with a maximum of choice and a minimum of meaning – wrote British philosopher Jonathan Sacks, who also added: Science tells us how but not why.
Both the market and democratic institutions give us freedom to choose, but they do not offer us any guidance about what to choose.

It is this crisis of meaning amidst a range of choices that makes culture so central in the European Union’s attempt to reshape its neighbourhood. At a time when both democracy and the market are challenged both inside and outside Europe, it is endeavours such as those discussed in Another Europe that give us hope that we can make a difference.”

Ivan Krastev
Chairman of the Centre for Liberal Strategies in Sofia (BG) and
Permanent Fellow at IWM, the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna (AT)

A 15 years timeline that illustrates the work on the ten different capacity-building programmes starts off the documentation. Infographics and maps deliver facts and overviews about ECF’s working approach and scope. A bookmark and hyperlinks guide the reader throughout the publication, which can easily been read in a nonlinear way.
